Core Banking Cloud Migration
Mid-Size Commercial Bank UAE
Project Overview
A mid-size commercial bank in the UAE was running its core banking, CRM, and digital banking platforms on ageing on-premises infrastructure that was approaching end-of-life. Hardware refresh costs were estimated at AED 12M, and the inflexible infrastructure couldn't support the bank's digital transformation ambitions — including a new mobile banking app and real-time payment processing capabilities.
We designed a hybrid cloud architecture using Microsoft Azure's UAE data centres for data residency compliance, with a phased migration strategy that moved workloads over 9 months without disrupting daily banking operations. Non-critical workloads migrated first to validate the architecture, followed by the CRM and digital banking platform, and finally the core banking system during a carefully orchestrated weekend cutover.
The new architecture leverages Azure Kubernetes Service for containerised workloads, Azure SQL Managed Instance for database migration, and ExpressRoute for dedicated private connectivity between the bank's data centre and Azure. FinOps practices with automated right-sizing and reserved instances reduced the bank's total infrastructure costs by 45% compared to the on-premises refresh option, while providing elastic scalability for peak transaction periods.

The Challenge
End-of-life hardware required AED 12M to refresh, the inflexible on-premises infrastructure couldn't support new digital banking products, and any migration had to maintain 24/7 banking operations with CBUAE regulatory compliance.
Our Solution
We designed a CBUAE-compliant hybrid cloud on Azure UAE, executed a phased 9-month migration with weekend cutovers, implemented Kubernetes for application modernisation, and established FinOps practices for cost optimisation.
Key Features
Hybrid cloud architecture with UAE data residency
Phased migration strategy with zero business disruption
Kubernetes containerisation for application modernisation
ExpressRoute private connectivity to Azure
FinOps framework with automated cost optimisation
Disaster recovery with cross-region failover
Technologies Used
Microsoft Azure
Kubernetes
Terraform
ExpressRoute
Azure SQL
Results & Impact
Infrastructure costs reduced by 45% vs on-premises refresh
System scalability improved 10x for peak transaction handling
Zero downtime during 9-month phased migration
New digital products can now launch in weeks instead of months
“Moving core banking to the cloud was the most critical IT project in our history. Nastrum's methodical approach gave our board the confidence to proceed, and they delivered flawlessly — zero downtime and 45% cost savings.”
